No-nonsense November

I have ADHD. I don’t keep that a secret. On my Instagram and my TikTok, I often share my experience living with ADHD. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

While I truly believe my ADHD fuels my strengths, it is also the cause of a lot of my anxiety. At it’s worst, can contribute to falling into a depression cycle when I don’t feel like I am able to keep up with what seems like simple, common demands of life.

ADHD & the task graveyard

To the untrained eye (who doesn’t follow me on social media), I am high-functioning - juggling a 9-5 career in marketing, running Mid-century Millennial on the side, keeping up with friends, family and DIY projects.

But what you’ll find bubbling just below the surface is a daily struggle to keep up with anything that requires executive function skills. Executive functioning skills enable planning, tracking, remembering, managing multiple tasks at one time and maintaining enough focus to complete tasks.

So, I work as hard as possible to keep up with the critical day-to-day to do list and the scariest tasks for my ADHD brain live in purgatory.

No-nonsense november:
doing the stuff that haunts you

But at some point, I needed a way to tackle those scary tasks and free up some mental space.

So, last November, I tried my hand at No-nonsense November: a month-long sprint to complete as many of the scary, long-avoided tasks that haunt me.

What I found was fairly simple, sharing my experience on Instagram and commitment to completing these tasks gave me the support through community and triggered the momentum I needed to crush the list. And y’all seemed to get inspired to do the same.

What types of tasks fall on the No-nonsense November list? For me (and maybe true for other ADHD brains) the tasks include things like; tackling my email inbox, mail pile, scheduling a dentist appointment, reviewing finances, organizing closets, getting an oil change, and pretty much anything I typically avoid at all costs.

Play Along: your No-nonsense November Bingo Card

In November, I try to do the scary tasks in a month-long sprint. Knock out as many as I can, in solidarity with y'all.

If you're up for it, fill out your own bingo card, or use mine. Also, the prizes for hitting bingo or finishing is feeling good about yourself which is important every once and a while. If both of these options feel inaccessible for whatever reason, I’ve include a "lite" card for those times you are feeling low-capacity.
