One Room Challenge - Week 6+: The Big Reveal of My Texas Tiki Guest Bedroom

My first ever One Room Challenge this fall has been such a welcome journey to push my vision for our guest bedroom into reality during a weird pandemic driven time period. I approached this room with clearer vision and more willingness to experiment, thanks to a lot of inspiration coming from the other ORC Guest Participants who blew me away.

If you’re here for the first time for the before and after: welcome and i’m so glad you stopped by! Learn a bit more about me here, or get caught up on the past 6+ weeks taking my sad guest bedroom with indistinguishable features into my final product which I would consider very inspired by quarantine Wes Anderson binge watching and our overall aesthetic leanings, Texas-Tiki.

Want to see the space “LIVE” or as LIVE as we can get in 2020 with all the details? Join Austin home design and vintage expert @livingwithleah and I on her Thrifty Thursday Instagram, Thursday, November 19th at 4PM CST where we’ll talk all things ATX sourcing and more!

The before & after

Renovations

I spent the majority of the One Room Challenge skim-coating my walls to take them from orange-peel texture to smooth, check out my full tutorial video here. The other huge change to the room was ripping out carpet and installing Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring (and it only took us one day!). From there, it was gravy, adding a lot of green paint, bold wallpapers and updating all the fixtures.

  1. Antique Gossip Bench from Facebook Marketplace, Cane, Black Behr Hi-gloss Paint

Before: antique gossip bench purchased on Facebook Marketplace screaming for a makeover

After: painted shiny black with cane detailing and a chartreuse seat cover for all the vintage private phone booth vibes

2. Custom-designed ATX guest cards printed through Artifact Uprising - Wood Block & Prints designed on Procreate, with background icons sourced from Creative Market.

Those are my dogs, if they were in Moonrise Kingdom.

3. Assorted thrifted frames painted with Clare Matcha Green Trim Paint inspired by A Beautiful Mess Easy Living Room Accent Wall
