We Bought a Giant Avocado Slice on Facebook Marketplace
We recently installed a stock tank pool in our backyard as part of a much larger backyard makeover. I will detail how to stock tank after we have truly experienced the fine-tuning of maintenance and setup.
Our original plan was to build a simple deck ledge around the pool to sit on. Then I found a giant avocado slice.
I recently deactivated my Facebook and came to the alarming realization that it would mean abandoning Facebook Marketplace. For anyone who hasn’t dabbled in the sale and purchase of goods on Facebook Marketplace, it holds the wonder and spontaneity of Craig’s List with less of a strong instinct that murder might be on the other end of the deal.
The algorithm is also quite good, when I rejoined Facebook Marketplace this giant avocado was one of the first items on my feed. It was listed as $50 with very minimal, vague details.
So with very little convincing, my husband was on board. We rented a 8 foot U-Haul truck to transport the 12.5 foot avocado and bought some extra ratchet straps because, math.
We drove up to Georgetown, about 30 minutes north of our Austin home, met our new friend William, who greeted us without shoes or socks and proceeded to help us move the behemoth avocado in this state.
AVOCADO FAQs
What is the origin of the Avocado?
All we know is that it’s original owner may have been a juice bar in South Austin and we were purchasing from it’s second owner - William’s mother who is a real estate agent and acquired it through these means. She has been since using it as a bird feeder, so it was covered in bird seed and ants. Like all good Facebook Marketplace finds.
What is the Avocado made of?
It is made out of fiberglass and wood. The fiberglass front is the exact texture of an avocado, it is perfect. The backside has some sort of fiberboard that is painted and needs some love. It is heavy and sturdy, but was able to be moved by 3 people semi-competently.
What will you do with the Avocado?
The avocado will be used as a “swim-up” bar for our stock tank pool. You can sit on it and put your feet in, or store your tiki drink while “swimming” - or floating, max 2 occupants in a horizontal position. I will need to restore the back side of the bar where the fiberboard flew off due to some wind encountered on the journey home.
Our backyard makeover is a work in progress, but here’s what we’ve done so far:
Removed weird deck that DID NOT have a body buried under it, despite our suspicions
Covered area with landscape fabric, two cubic yards of sand and two cubic yards of pea gravel
Installed 8-foot stock tank pool
DIY painted sunshine chiminea
Seating and lounging areas
