A Mid-century Millennial: A GIFinition
Siri, Define: “Mid-century Millennial”
And now, for the multi-part, GIFinition.
Mid-century Modern (MCM)
An American design movement popularized from the mid 1940s through the late 1960s. We now mostly apply this to; clean-lined, well-made furniture from this era, architecture that brought a bit of modern flare to the American suburbs and a general aesthetic captured through art and entertainment from the time period.
I like Mid-century as a general timescape for aesthetic, but we’re not monogamous and we have our problems.
There are many relics of an even more racist and sexist past that live in this time period, which is important to acknowledge that over-idealizing this time period would require ignoring a scary whitewashed and problematic history. It’s also the reason you see proud boys in antique malls sometimes. Take the chairs, leave the bigotry.
Long story long, I am an old soul who grew up worshipping Elvis and dreaming of a (very) early retirement in Palm Springs full of rattan furniture.
Millennial
Defined as born 1981-1996, but I am a 1991 model, defined by a few key themes:
Impressionable, though still naive age during 9/11. I watched this on a public school television with little to no explanation.
Access to computers and the internet for almost as long as I can remember. I cut my teeth on Myst and Putt Putt Saves the Zoo, worked my way up to AOL instant messenger (greasegirl2002 was my first screen name), spilled my guts on Xanga and was the first generation to live through teenage years captured on MySpace.
Into bullshit and very apologetic about it.
I am a millennial despite my flare for the past. Just ask my student loan debt c/o my English Literature degree I chose in the middle of a recession. Also, I bought a stupid 12-foot avocado for my backyard. There’s a lot of self-loathing, progressed further by TikTok by Gen Z.
Basically, It me:
So what’s the blog about?
and have I mentioned that i’m also obsessed with Wes Anderson?
Renovating and designing my eclectic 70’s Texas ranch-style home with a mix of vintage and modern finds, drinking in my tiki bar, DIY projects and a lot of stuff from the nick at nite that raised me.
